Vietnam is an independent country located in Southeast Asia. While perhaps best known for the Vietnam War that took place during the Cold War era, this country has a rich history that includes colonization by both the Chinese and French. If you are planning to visit Vietnam and want to taste a bit of its Asian culture, here are the five best places to visit in Vietnam:
• Ho Chi Minh City- Also known as Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City is quite possibly the center of tourism in the country. It is the largest city in Vietnam and not surprisingly there are a wide assortment of attractions to visit and explore such as Notre Dame Cathedral, the Vietnamese History Museum, Cu Chu Tunnel and many other historical places. A lot of events occurred in Saigon during the Vietnam War and if you are into history and want explore the region then Saigon is a can’t miss destination.
• Mekong Delta- The Mekong Delta is where the famous Floating Market of Vietnam is located. The floating market is similar to a wet market except that instead of kiosks and stores, people sell and purchase stuff by mini boats. If you want to avail of almost all of the spices in the market that are unique to Vietnam you should visit around June up through September. Aside from this the Mekong Delta is the place where the famous ancient pagodas and houses are located. Eco National Park is also located in this area.
• Dalat- If you have read the history of Vietnam you probably know that the country was under the rule of emperors in ancient times (similar to China). Are you fond of the movie “The King and I”? It is a true story about a Vietnamese emperor and the movie was shot in a real Vietnamese palace. Dalat is where the last emperor of Vietnam’s palace is located. If you want to visit the real place you should definitely put this city on your itinerary.
• Hoi An- Hoi An is a city in Vietnam where you can enjoy many shows of traditional Vietnamese rituals. These shows are produced especially for the tourists. There is also a Japanese covered bridge and some museums here. If you want to visit Hoi An it will be best to go around January or February so that the weather will not be scorching hot.
• Hanoi- Visiting Vietnam will not be complete without going to Hanoi. This city is the capital of the country and here you will find both the Hanoi Opera Theater and the Water Puppet Theatre. If you are interested in seeing Vietnamese water puppetry then this is the place to be.
