If you own a swimming pool you know how wonderful it can be on a hot summer day. Not only is it fun to frolic in the water to keep yourself cool in warm weather, but it’s also a great way to get some much needed exercise.

Unfortunately, just like with most things around the home you may encounter some problems with your swimming pool. The most common problem that can be extremely frustrating is cloudy water. Although having cloudy pool water is quite common, it can be a signal that your water is too alkaline or that too much debris is making its way into your pool. In order to cure this condition so you can start enjoying your pool right away here are some remedies for cloudy pool water that you can try:

•    Pool clarifier- Swimming pool clarifier works by coagulating tiny particles like dirt and oils, allowing your pool filter to do its work keeping your water clear. This option should do the trick if your pool’s cloudiness is caused primarily by debris. Just add 2 ounces of clarifier per 10,000 gallons of water once a week and you should see results almost immediately. However, if alkalinity is an issue with your water you may need to seek out additional options.

•    Baking soda- Baking soda is a very good agent for regulating the pH of water-which is why it is one of the best products to use for clearing up pool water if the cloudiness is caused by a high pH. The tricky part is in knowing how much to add. For this task you will need one of the large 12-pound bags of baking soda found in most home-supply stores. Add two pounds of the baking soda every hour until the pH is neutralized.

•    Aluminum sulfate- One of the most common causes of cloudy pool water is accumulated dirt, and that cannot easily be removed by the water filter. Aluminum sulfate has certain components that can make the dirt in the water stick to each other so that it will be easier to remove. The ratio of aluminum sulfate to water is 8 ounces per 10,000 gallons of water. This cloudy pool water remedy is ideal for those pools with elusive floating dirt.

•    Copper solution- Copper solution is actually used after cleaning the pool. It inhibits bacterial, as well as algae growth, thereby preventing the clouding of the pool. You will know just how good the copper solution works by testing the water before and after putting in the copper solution. It should work immediately.

•    Stockings or pantyhose- Since one of the most common causes of water clouding is dirt that is too small to be filtered out by the water filter, you can use old stockings and pantyhose for the filtering. All you have to do is to cover the filter with the pantyhose or stocking so that the floating dirt will be trapped.

Although the above remedies are good ways of clearing your cloudy pool water, it will still be best to take some preventative measures so that you will be able to enjoy crystal clear water with fewer interruptions. The most effective way of keeping the pool safe for people’s use is to clean it regularly and to frequently test the pool’s pH to make sure it is within the normal range. A good pool water test kit can help determine your pools pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness and diagnose other problems that may effect the health of your pool water.
