When looking for the perfect piece of furniture to be the centerpiece of your living room, you want to make sure you consider all your options. Coffee tables are the most common addition to the center of the room, but some people do fine without them. Instead, you can have an open floor space, an ottoman, or some sort of art decoration. However, coffee tables are the standard furniture selection to be placed in front of a sofa. To decide on the type of table you want, there are a couple choices you need to make.
Coffee Table Designs

The first choice is probably the shape of the table. Since you already will have some sense of the material or finish you want for the table, the shape is the biggest unknown. Take a look at your current space and imagine different shapes there. An oval coffee table can be perfect for one situation and look hideous in another. Try to match the table to your other furnishings and your natural tasks.
Once you’ve decided on a basic shape, you can consider the material of the table more. Wooden tables are the most common because they are cheap and durable. You can also paint or stain them to match just about any type of room decoration. You can also buy metal or glass coffee tables, however these will cost you more and be less flexible if you redecorate. They do provide a different feel to the room.
Keep in mind that certain trends are just fads and will pass in a short amount of time. You don’t want to have to refurnish your room in five years because you went ahead and purchased a mirrored coffee table and now think it is the worst thing man has ever thought up. If you go with a more neutral table that is made of wood then at least you can salvage the table by refinishing the wood at a later time.
