Ever wonder how DUI attorneys set their prices? Me too, and I’m a DUI attorney. I own my own law firm and so I’m in charge of setting my prices. And let me tell you, it’s tough. And it’s tough for several reasons. First, it’s not like there is a specific value placed on these services. I mean, there is no book that tells you what a DUI in each particular circumstance is worth. Second, there is no general value placed on these circumstances. I know attorneys that charge $1,500 for a DUI and ones that charge $10,000.
What is the right price for a DUI attorney?
I think the answer, when it really boils down to it, is how valuable is this service to you? What value do you place on it? And it’s my job to educate you on why my services cost what they do and get you to understand why my prices are what they are.
And that isn’t an easy job, believe it or not, at least for me. Because I’m not in the business of fear mongering. I could ask you questions like how much would you pay to stay out of jail, or how much would you pay to keep your driving privileges and your job, but I don’t really like doing that, even though in the end those are the stakes of the case. I’d rather let you know what we can do for you and have you decide.
The problem with that, though, is that people don’t hire DUI attorneys for those reasons. Being charged with a crime is such a scary, new experience for so many people that they don’t know what to think or do. And they believe intuitively that when they walk into your office that you are going to try to charge them a bunch of money only to bilk them out of it later.
So, how much does a DUI attorney cost?
I can tell you what it isn’t. It isn’t the cheapest person you can find. That kind of DUI attorney, for the most part, is out for one thing. To get your money and plead out your case. There are travel agents and trial attorneys. Travel agents walk you through process, right into a guilty plea. Trial attorneys fight for you. And fighters cost money.
I guess the moral of this story is that there is no truly right price for a DUI attorney. It depends on many factors, including what is at stake for you. But there is a wrong price for a DUI lawyer, and that’s dirt cheap. Don’t fall into that trap. You’ll regret it later.
