Squirrels look really cute until they start to wreak havoc in the backyard and all over your well-tended garden. Although they are just small creatures they are capable of causing so much wreckage you might think that a stampede broke on your garden while you were sleeping. Not only can this ruin your garden but the damages can be quite costly. In order to prevent this from happening there are a few things that you can do.
Using a simple repellent is generally the best way to keep these clever rodents at bay. Although you can easily find a ready-made repellent in most hardware stores you can also make one at home without all that much effort. Here are some tips on how you can make homemade squirrel repellent to keep these annoying pests away:
• Mothballs- Mothballs are normally used to keep mold and moths away from clothing inside your closets, however they can also be used for keeping squirrels away. Perhaps the best way of using mothballs as a squirrel repellent is by placing them inside an old sock and then hanging it in a place where you don’t want the squirrels to be, such as the entrance-way to the garden. Rodents don’t like the smell and most likely they will vacate the area once they have gotten a whiff of the mothballs.
• Ammonia- This works just like the mothballs. Dip some rags in an ammonia solution and place them in areas that you want to keep squirrel-free. Using ammonia in the attic will also help keep squirrels from going inside and nesting in your home.
• Cayenne- Cayenne, which is normally used as an ingredient for cooking, can also be used as a natural squirrel repellent. In fact, it is one of the main ingredients in many ready-made repellents that can be bought in stores. To use cayenne as a repellent you can mix cayenne powder with water, put it in a spray bottle, and spray it all over the area where the squirrels usually go. These critters don’t like the taste of cayenne as it is too hot for them.
• Removal of attractants- Although this may not be a homemade repellent, it is one of the easiest things to do, as well as the most practical. Squirrels love to steal pet food and birdseed, so if you have these at home it will be best to keep them safely inside where the squirrels can’t get to them or smell them. If you have a bird feeder be sure to keep it far away from your garden or any other area you want to protect.
