Wind Power & Wind Spinners

There is something about all garden wind ornaments, from wind spinners to whirligigs, that rings true. Each and every one of them owes their ability to function to a combination of three separate elements. First, the engineering and artistic skills of the people who created them, second, the joy that people take in viewing them, and finally, the amazing power of wind. Remove any one of these elements from the equation and the wind spinner might as well be a rock.

But of all of those elements perhaps the most unpredictable is the wind. After all, you can’t be sure that it is going to blow on any given day. But without it all garden sculptures, wind chimes and related garden instruments just can’t function.

So what is wind? Well, in a nutshell, it is nothing more than air in motion. If you want to be really scientific about it, it is air that is in motion parallel to the Earth. You can’t see it but you can feel it– and sometimes you can hear it too if it is blowing hard enough.

When we talk about wind power–whether we’re talking about huge wind farms that power communities or simple wind ornaments like spinners–we are talking about harnessing the wind in order to use its natural energy.

Think of sails for a powerful example of how strong and useful the wind can be. For millenia, ships made their way over bodies of water like lakes and oceans on nothing fancier than broad sheets strung in such a way as to allow the wind to blow into them.

Indeed, when you think about it, wind has done an awful lot for human culture. It has helped our commerce. It has helped us cool down on hot summer days. It has even been used to fan fires.

Is it any wonder then that wind also delivers smaller, less complex pleasures? Like the sweet melodies of ceramic wind chimes? Or the brilliant colors of a wind spinner? Or even a dragon-shaped wind sock?

You can take a lot of pride in knowing that you are decorating your garden and filling your landscape with creations that are powered by wind. It’s true green energy. And given that it has worked so well for so long, why try something new?

Pull up a lawn chair, get yourself some ice tea and watch your garden wind spinners with pride!
