Wooden Kitchen Stools With an Asian Theme

Kitchen bar stools don’t have to be chrome or adjustable swivel designs with angular seats and contemporary geometric shapes. There are wooden kitchen stools that go with modern kitchens and allow for unique Asian or minimalist Zen themes to be part of the décor. In fact, some of the trendiest, sleekest concepts in contemporary kitchen design revolve around Chinese or Japanese kitchen bar stools that have been designed specifically for such things as Japanese sushi bars and simple Asian teahouses.

Japanese Zen Stools

The plain square or geometric designs, which may be finished in dark lacquer, are the classic wooden kitchen stools that you might find in a Zen-themed space accented by simple bamboo mats and soft green tea colored napkins or dishes. These may also be saddle-style stools which are used without cushions. Classic Japanese stools can be painted, left unfinished or darkened to be almost black.

Chinese Bar Stools

The Chinese kitchen bar stools that work best in Western style homes are those that don’t swivel or adjust but are simply wooden rectangular seats, like benches, which can be painted red, green or simply oiled. Teak stools may also be a good choice. Although Indonesian and not Chinese, they are used throughout Asia as outdoor furniture. If your kitchen has an outdoor feel or a space for plants, give it an ethnic touch with wooden stools. For a more exotic flavor try rattan, bamboo or wicker, and accent with padding that has a poppy or chrysanthemum or bamboo motif. Remember that Chinese items needn’t be red or overly elaborate.

By the way, there’s a style of outdoor stool used in Chinese teahouses and street bars that are made from wood and curved rattan or bent bamboo. The base is an open structure that looks somewhat like a wine cask’s skeleton, and the seat is round. They are basic stools in China, but in a western home tend to give an exotic air. Painted in modern colors, these kitchen bar stools are most common in low varieties, but do come in counter height if you search various Asian importers.
